What Is The Best Alpine Ski Resort In Europe?

A ski resort is a resort developed for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports. In Europe, most ski resorts are towns or villages in or adjacent to a ski area – a mountainous area with pistes (ski trails) and a ski lift system. On this page, you will find a slip list of ski resorts which we think are the best in Europe. The editor who create the list was visited only Kopaonik, but my college (students of medicine) recommended me other ski resorts. If you think we need to add more others, write to us. So let’s start.

Kopaonik, the largest mountain range in Serbia, extends from the northwest to the southeast for 80 km, and has a width of around 40 km in the middle. Kopaonik is the largest ski resort in Serbia with excellently prepared runs, which offers unlimited joy to all categories of skiers, from beginners to highly skilled ones. Kopaonik ski resort comprises of about 55km of runs for alpine skiing and12 km of runs for cross country (nordic) skiing. For those who enjoy skiing at night, we have prepared a lighted run “Malo Jezero” in the very centre of the resort. Apart from that, for the youngest skiers and all those who are taking their first ski steps, we have prepared a secured “ski kindergarten” area with a conveyor belt and a carousel which makes learning basic skiing skills easier.

9 Zermatt, Switzerland

Zermatt lies at the foot of the Matterhorn.
Source https://www.seacoastskiclub.net/zermatt-switzerland

Zermatt lies at the foot of the Matterhorn. The town’s touristic development is closely linked to what is most probably the world’s most famous mountain. The vacation destination is a car-free zone, has preserved its original character and offers nearly unlimited possibilities as far as excursions are concerned.

The location of Zermatt at the foot of the Matterhorn and in the middle of an enormous hiking and ski region makes it one of the world’s most attractive vacation villages. The ski region encompasses 54 mountain railways and lifts as well as 360 kilometers of pistes. The region called “Matterhorn glacier paradise” is Europe’s largest and highest lying summer skiing region. Numerous national ski teams train here in the summer.

The region is legendary amongst mountaineers: the Haute Route, a challenging international route that takes several days to complete, leads from Mont Blanc to Zermatt. Over 400 kilometers of hiking trails lead through and out of the Matter Valley, including the mule traders’ trails, which date back to the 13th century (a part of these paths is paved).

Where to stay

We recommend you to stay in Grand Hotel Zermatterhof, the hotel with a history.

Towards the end of the 19th century, the remote mountain village of Zermatt was an up-and-coming summer resort. Wealthy city-dwellers would withdraw, often for several weeks at a time, to this retreat in the mountains for their summer holidays.

Popova Shapka ski resort will appeal to powder hounds looking for a sense of adventure and something completely different. The ski slopes are all set above the treeline on high alpine meadow terrain requiring very little snow base to become skiable.

Plans are gathering dust to put in a new six-seater chairlift. The off-piste has loads of opportunity & very little competition unless the cat ski clients have a down day!

3 Andermatt, Switzerland

Andermatt, until recently a ski resort in decline, is back with a bang
Source https://www.thechediandermatt.com/en/Andermatt/Winter

Andermatt, until recently a ski resort in decline, is back with a bang. It’s Gemsstock mountain has always appealed to free-riders and off-piste skiers, but its new hotels and its shared SkiArena with lift-linked Sedrun means it can now compete again as a mainstream winter sports resort.

In the Ursern Valley, at the crossroads of Switzerland’s North-South and East-West Alpine passes, Andermatt was once one of the traffic hubs of Europe. The opening of the St.Gotthard railway tunnel in 1882 and the road tunnel completion nearly a century later, however literally undermined Andermatt’s economy, and what was once a thriving area became a dead end.

Its lifeline was the Swiss army. From 1885 to the early 21st century, Andermatt became a garrison town. This military occupation choked off its development as a ski resort. Andermatt had a snowy mountain, high ski lifts reaching nearly 3,000m, and narrow streets lined with traditional chalets but it also had barracks full of soldiers and a heavy-arms firing range.

Where to stay

We recommend you to stay in The Chedi Andermatt, Switzerland.

2 Villars, Switzerland

Villars is posh, polished and very Swiss, with its mountain railway
Source https://globalgrasshopper.com/destinations/europe/big-pictures-winter-villars-switzerland/

Villars is posh, polished, and very Swiss, with its mountain railway, picturesque chalets, elegant restaurants, and smart hotels. It’s also one of the best family ski resorts close to Geneva, with a ski area that stretches across to Les Diablerets, Gryon, and high, snowsure Glacier 3000.

Villars Sur Ollon has a long pedigree as a ski resort. It has been one of the classiest places to take a winter holiday for over a century. There are excellent hotels; fine restaurants on the slopes and in the village; not only normal ski lifts but also a mountain railway connecting Villars with the slopes above it and the neighboring resorts of Les Diablerets and Gryon; a snowsure glacier at the far end of the ski area (‘Glacier 3000’); good nursery slopes and a choice of child-friendly ski schools. And everything is within easy reach of Geneva airport making Villars a great weekend destination.

Whilst Villars may not have the visible glitz and bling of nearby Verbier, a lot of the rich and famous own property around here. And it’s not just celebrities who prefer Villars’ discreet charms. Some of Verbier’s mountain guides bring clients over, knowing that they’ll have the backcountry largely to themselves. In fact the mountains around Villars form the first 3000m barrier on the North-West side of the Alps, collecting whatever snow comes that way. Of course, Villars is much too staid and traditional to boast about its freeriding potential, so very few know it makes a surprisingly good short-break destination for mixed ability groups whose strongest skiers and boarders want off-piste excitement almost as much as the rest of their party want a really nice long lunch.
